I was 19, just a broke student trying to figure out life. Back then, I had a boyfriend who seemed perfect—funny, confident, and someone I thought I could totally trust. I had saved up a little money from my part-time jobs, so one day I asked him, ‘What can I do with this?’
At the time, I honestly thought only guys knew what to do with money (sounds familiar? 🤔). So when he said, ‘I’ve got an investment for you,’ I was like, ‘Okay, tell me!’ His response? ‘Just trust me.’
And I did. A couple of months later, we were lying in bed, and I saw this app on his phone—the one he used for investing. I noticed there was a lot of money in there. ‘Wait, how did this happen?!’ I asked.
He grinned and said, ‘I invested your money in Bitcoin!’ I was shocked. I even joked, ‘Wow, you’re not just good in bed—you’re also a financial genius!’ 😂 Feeling super impressed, I gave him more of my savings. I mean, why not, right?
But then... things took a turn. A few weeks later, we were out with his friends, and he started making jokes about me. In front of everyone. I felt so embarrassed. 😔 I told him later that I wasn’t okay with it, and things just went downhill from there. Two weeks later, we broke up.
I was heartbroken 💔. I really thought he was the one, you know? Like, the guy I was going to marry.
Then, about two weeks after we broke up, I remembered... OMG, all my money is still with him! I was so nervous to ask, but I knew I had to. I texted him: ‘Hey, what’s going on with the money I gave you?’ His reply? ‘What money?’
I felt like the floor had just dropped out from under me. That was the moment I realized: I couldn’t rely on anyone else to manage my money. If I didn’t take control, no one else would.
But then I had another realization: I had no idea how to do this on my own. I tried to find a woman who had done this before, someone who could guide me—but guess what? I couldn’t find anyone. It was all guys, and I was so done trusting men with my money.
That day, I made a promise to myself: I was going to figure this out. I was going to take control, learn everything I could, and invest in myself. I didn’t know where this journey would take me, but one thing was clear: hurt 😞 but super motivated 💪, I was ready to take charge of my future.
Got something to say?
